Lately, I\u2019ve been knitting quite a few berets<\/strong>, and although each design has its own magic, there\u2019s one detail that always makes a difference: how to start a beret from the top<\/strong>. It\u2019s a small, almost discreet step, but it\u2019s the beginning, and it truly matters. The center looks neat<\/strong>, the shape settles better<\/strong>, and lace patterns open up beautifully<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, I want to share the method I use to start my berets from the crown<\/strong>\u2014the same one used in Inflorescencia<\/em>, Fauna<\/em>, and Flora<\/em>\u2014to achieve a firm, round, and clean start<\/strong>. I\u2019m also including a YouTube knitting tutorial<\/strong> where you can see the process in real time, exactly as I do it while knitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Start a Beret from the Top (and Why I Love It)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Knitting a top-down beret<\/strong> has many advantages, but there are two that have truly won me over:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Control the size from the very beginning.<\/strong> You can adjust the rate of increases<\/strong> as you go\u2014whether your gauge<\/strong> differs from the pattern, you\u2019re designing a beret from scratch<\/strong>, or you\u2019re using a different yarn weight<\/strong>. The maximum diameter of my berets usually ends up around 26 cm<\/strong>. Once the size looks right, simply transfer the stitches to a long circular needle<\/strong> so you can stretch the piece fully, measure it, and try it on. It\u2019s much better if it\u2019s already blocked<\/strong>, as this prevents surprises later if the fabric grows after blocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See the final shape early on.<\/strong> This is incredibly motivating. The beret becomes a small jewel that gradually emerges, forming geometric shapes<\/strong>\u2014from simple stockinette stitch berets<\/strong> to those with lace patterns<\/strong>. When you start from the top, the motifs\u2014lace, spirals, or textured stitches<\/strong>\u2014grow from a perfectly defined center<\/strong>, bringing balance and harmony to the final design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Achieve a Clean and Beautiful Start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When working from the crown down<\/strong>, the most important thing is making sure the center is tightly closed<\/strong> with the right tension<\/strong>. I also like to include a small stem at the center of the beret<\/strong>, worked as a 4-stitch i-cord<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
